Case Study: A smarter, safer setup - Central Park Motel’s ICT overhaul
When Central Park Motel first approached CAPconnect, their ICT environment was holding them back.
From outdated hardware to unsecured networks, it was clear the business needed a complete technology refresh to support daily operations and provide a better experience for both staff and guests.
The challenges
The motel’s reception computer was running an unsupported version of Windows 10 and there was no reliable backup system in place, leaving business-critical data at risk.
Staff and guests were sharing the same unsecured Wi-Fi network, creating serious cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Email communications were conducted through a free Bigpond address, undermining the professionalism of the brand, while company files were scattered across multiple machines with no central repository.
On top of that, the existing UPS (uninterruptible power supply) was failing and offered little protection during outages.
CapConnect’s solution
CAPconnect designed and implemented a comprehensive managed IT solution tailored to the unique needs of the motel, with security as a top priority. A Sophos XGS firewall was installed along with managed endpoint protection across all workstations, while the power backup systems were replaced with new, battery-backed UPS units.
To address network performance and security, we segmented guest and staff networks using VLANs, updated all wireless access points and introduced bandwidth controls to ensure guest usage didn’t interfere with operational needs. Faulty access point cabling was also identified and replaced.
On the workstation side, a brand-new touchscreen reception PC was installed and the motel’s RoomMaster booking system was seamlessly migrated. Email communications were brought up to standard by registering a new domain (centralparkmotel.com.au), setting up Microsoft 365 with Exchange Online and migrating all Bigpond emails to the new domain.
We also centralised file storage and collaboration using SharePoint Online, implementing a structured folder system with user access controls.
For ongoing data protection, AvePoint cloud-to-cloud backup was deployed to safeguard all Microsoft 365 services. The office printer was then configured to work with the new email system for seamless scan-to-email functionality.
Key results
Centralised, secure file storage with automatic cloud backup
Segmented and optimised Wi-Fi for staff and guests
A modern reception system with updated software
A professional business email setup with better brand credibility
Robust cybersecurity measures to protect the business
Ongoing support and proactive monitoring through a Managed ICT Services Agreement
Here’s what Susan, the Site Manager at Central Park Motel, had to say about the experience:
“CAPconnect managing our IT has made a huge difference to the way we operate. They replaced our old printer setup and supplied a new machine that’s been so much more reliable, we were constantly changing ink with our old printer, so this has really improved our efficiency.
We also thought our computer system was backing up properly, but when CAPconnect did an audit, we found out it wasn’t. They installed SOPHOS, which now backs everything up and gives us peace of mind. We even had hackers try to get in recently and SOPHOS stopped them.
The new UPS units have been great too. We had a power outage recently and everything kept running smoothly.” – Susan, Site Manager, Central Park Motel
Looking ahead
CAPconnect continues to support Central Park Motel through regular monitoring, patch management and helpdesk services. We’ve also made recommendations for future staff training on Microsoft 365 tools and digital security and we’re currently working with Telstra to resolve ongoing internet stability issues.
The outcome
Central Park Motel has gone from a fragmented and vulnerable ICT setup to a secure, modern and professionally managed system. With CAPconnect as their technology partner, they’re better positioned to deliver great guest experiences and run their business with confidence.
